Vispassana
The Insight Meditation Community of Charlottesville explores the many benefits of Vipassana meditation. Also known as Insight Meditation, Vipassana is a practice that trains us to live mindfully in the present moment. Literally meaning "to see clearly," Vipassana enables individuals to experience all aspects of life from a place of greater stillness. The meditator learns to relate to life with greater clarity and loving kindness and with less fear, anxiety and stress. Our meetings usually begin with instructions and a 45 minute meditation, or "sitting." This is followed by a "dharma" talk (dharma means "teaching") that addresses different facets of a meditation practice, including how to bring the heart of meditation into our daily life. After the talk, we have an informal discussion, individual sharing, questions, and general announcements. For details, visit their web page at http://www.imeditation.org. ~8/05

The format includes a 40-minute silent meditation on chairs (and/or cushions if you bring your own) and includes a 10-minute guided meditation for beginners, a 15-minute walking meditation, and a 10-15 minute reading from a meditation text. The remainder of the session is devoted to discussion, where participants are encouraged to talk about their meditation experience, the reading, or about how they're using their mindfulness practice in their daily lives. Meditation Instruction - meditation is one of the most difficult skills to learn and master. Most practitioners spend most of their time day dreaming and are unable to control their wandering mind. Private meditation sessions can greatly help to deepen meditation through contagious influence. Just as a person who is happy and cheerful can cheer up those around them, a person in meditation can also influence those who are nearby. For more information on private or classroom instruction contact - Stephen W. Leslie at gofigure2006@verizon.net or call (443)745-4469. Stephen Leslie is the former director of the Himalayan Institute of Maryland and has 25 years experience in meditation. He was voted "best speaker in Howard County" in 1982 and 1984. He has been a meditation instructor since 1975. There is a nominal charge for the service. `9/1/05

Bethesda, MD. THE ELEUTHERIAN PAN-COMMUNION OF ADIDAM, MARYLAND is a gathering of devotees of the living Realizer, Adi Da Samraj (Da Free John), practicing ego-transcending devotion via self-understanding and in joyful relationship to Adi Da Samraj. We have a public temple, spiritual bookstore and gift shop located in downtown Bethesda, MD a five minute walk from the Bethesda Metro Station. It is located at 7215 Arlington Road suite 202 (near the Giant Grocery Store). We have numerous events happening at the store each month. Although we have many different events, you can always count on an introductory evening, a Basket of Tolerance Movie night, and ongoing Sacred Art and Music Performances. The introductory evenings on Adidam are based on the life and teaching of Adi Da Samraj. These events are a combination of video footage of Adi Da Samraj discussing an aspect of God-Realization, recitations from His Teaching Word, and a lively consideration about your feelings on the topic. We also have a monthly Basket of Tolerance Video. These are all movies that Adi Da Samraj recommends we watch to deepen our understanding of ourselves and the Great Spiritual tradition that we have inherited. These movies always open one's heart and mind. Lastly, you can be involved in our sacred arts occasions. These events usually consist of top quality musicians, dancers and poets. Mindfulness
FRESH BREEZE MINDFULNESS SANGHA (FBMS) meets at the at the Govans Presbyterian Church, 5824 York Road, Baltimore. Saturday mornings from 8:30 until 10:30 a.m. Call Carol at 410-323-2180 for details or email mailto:freshbreeze@earthlink.net. The FBMS is a meditation group formed with the intention of studying and practicing mindful living as taught by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. We meet to share sitting and walking meditation, sutra readings and dharma discussion in the style of Plum Village, the practice center established by Thich Nhat Hanh in France. The group welcomes those who are new to meditation practice, as well as those with an established practice. Newcomers are encouraged to call beforehand to receive a brief orientation before their first session. As each session will begin with silent sitting, it is important that all participants plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before 8:30 a.m., so that we will be prepared to settle into silence by 8:30. Some meditation cushions (zafus) and chairs will be available, however it will be helpful if those who have their own cushions or meditation benches would bring them for sitting. ~10/05
